21 Apr 7 Interesting Hot Dog Toppings For 7 Days of Quarantine
The Insider has recently posted an opinion article by Sophie Kleeman that got us thinking. It’s titled “Hot dogs are the best quarantine food” and of course, that instantly peaked our curiosity.
Sophie argues that they are affordable, low maintenance, but capable of transforming into haute cuisine, long-lasting, versatile and most importantly: delicious. Her favourite part? “You can shower it with accoutrements, and if you were so inclined, you could make a different kind of hot dog every night for a week and never get bored.”
To further back up Sophies point, we have decided to share a different hot dog style for everyday of the week. We’re calling it 7 interesting hot dog toppings for 7 days of Quarantine. We’ll show you how to dress up your hot dog with minimal, common ingredients. We know being in quarantine limits the food you have available, so we chose ingredients and recipes that are easy to come by.
Everybody loves tacos! You can dress them up however you like, giving this Mexican styled hot dog room for creative variety. Do you have pickled onions hanging around in your fridge? Throws those bad boys on there for a tangy twist.
If you are a taco traditionalist, cut your hot dogs in half length wise, grill them to your desired perfection and wrap those suckers in a grilled flour tortilla; Top with cheddar, lettuce, salsa and sour cream. This taco is excellent paired with a margarita, so get that tequila out and celebrate like its Cinco De Mayo.
New York Street Dogs
We’re knee deep in isolation, I’m sure most of you are experiencing some form of cabin fever in one way or another. Well the feeling is mutual. All of a sudden, the crowded streets of New York don’t seem too bad. Luckily, we have a hot dog for you, it’ll take you right back to the streets of New York City.
This is a simple hot dog to make that packs amazing flavour, much like the streets it calls home. Serve a boiled hot dog on a soft bun with sauerkraut and spicy brown mustard. Pair this hot dog with your favourite stout to enjoy the tangy kick of the hot dog with the smooth beer for an Irish twist.
Kimchi Hot Dog
On our next stop we bring you to the orient where we will add a Korean favourite to spice up our hot dog: Kimchi. We love Kimchi, not only is a packed full of healthy probiotics because it’s fermented cabbage, but it tastes incredible on pizza, eggs and hot dogs!
For this hot dog, ditch the sauerkraut, and go for a spicier version of healthy fermented cabbage. Make it extra delicious by brushing the buns with melted butter before you grill them. Kimchi pairs really well with an aromatic Pinot Noir red wine.
Grilled Mexican Street Corn Dog
Get those chips ready and enjoy another Mexican spin of the hot dog, but with a twist. Experience the streets of Mexico with guacamole and corn salad as your hot dog toppings. This is an easy recipe that is sure to kick your hot dog into high gear. You can get extra fancy by piping some guacamole onto this hot dog and sprinkle it with a quick makeshift elote.
Guacamole is easy to make. Mash together chopped red onions, chopped red chilies, avocados, coriander, tomatoes, lime juice and olive oil. Elote is just as easy. Mix together Grilled corn, lime juice, cilantro, chili powder and crumbled cotija cheese. (Feta or Romano work as well!)
Pair this hot dog with a Bloody Maria, which is similar to a bloody Mary but with a south-of-the-border twist. Swap the vodka for tequila and add pickled jalapeños juice. YUM!
The BLT Dog
Bacon makes everything better, wouldn’t you agree? This hot dog is wonderfully crunchy thanks to the bed of lettuce sitting at the bottom of the bun. A twist on the classic sandwich that is both delicious and packed full of veggies.
Add shredded lettuce or green cabbage to the bun, top with your hot dog, chopped tomatoes, crispy bacon and drizzle with ranch. Pair this hot dog with a flavourful IPA to enjoy those “I’m really there” pub vibes.
Mac And Cheese Hot Dog
Add some Italian flair to your hot dog by topping it with Mac and Cheese. This hot dog comes with a recipe for homemade mac and cheese. But if you end up using boxed cheesy pasta we won’t judge; we are in quarantine.
Grill the buns and dogs and top with your mac and cheese. Serve with a Pinot Grigio white wine and stair out of your windows imagining the beautiful rolling hills of Tuscany. It’s almost like you’re there.
The Classic Hot Dog
This one is subjective because not everyone has the same idea as to what goes on a classic hot dog. This hot dog is topped with whatever you love and paired with whatever you want to drink!
